Listen, I get it. Your are a new mom. Your head is spinning with a million things and you are exhausted. Choosing what your baby will wear doesn't have to be hard, but I know that every little decision at this point might feel hard right now, so I've pulled together some ideas for you.
After shooting babies for four years, I have a pretty good idea about what looks best in photos. The main thing to remember about dressing your new baby for a newborn photo session is to NOT over do it. To me, nothing is worse than seeing a baby dressed in so many frills, ruffles, bow, and STUFF that you can't even really appreciate the baby herself.
So, here's what I recommend:
1. A Swaddle
A sweet, organic, neutral and pretty swaddle is always a good choice. It complements the baby and the session but also lets us see the baby. In fact, I mostly wrap the swaddle pretty loosely, because I love to see little baby toes and fingers sticking out. Now, sometimes we may do a tighter swaddle if baby needs some extra comforting and that works too. It’s still all about your baby.
2. A Onesie.
Again, go for something sweet neutral and organic looking and feeling. If you want to keep it really simple and plain white onesie does the trick, but you can get a little more adventerous… maybe a onesie that compliments the color of your nursery or one with a pretty, subtle print.
3. A Baby Outfit or Gown.
I love, love love a sweet outfit on a new baby. Just like the swaddle and the onesie be sure to keep it simple and natural. The only thing to keep in mind with an outfit is to try to choose one that that doesn't cover the baby's hands and feet. We all love footie pajamas for baby, but during the sesssion we want to be able to see those little hands and feet.
You can also add in a little hat or a sweet hair bow to any of these, but, again, keep it subtle and sweet and not huge and obnoxious.
And, just FYI, sometimes we keep baby in just one thing for the whole session, but a lot of times we are able to do a couple different variations of the items I just mentioned so you can get a bit of variety in your shots.
Also, don't forget I will come to your house with a tub full of onesies and swaddles and hats and bows. So if you really just don't want to deal with thinking about it, leave it to me! We can select something for your baby to wear when I arrive.
